I Hate Gophur

I swear to god, sometimes I want to smack him.

We had a meeting not too long ago about the new infantry stuff scheduled for 1.25 and beyond. One part of that was the direction of eliminating the deploy animations for all deployable weapons so that we might be able to “pintle mount” the weapons on window sills, bunkers, fences, etc. Basically, a player would run around with the bipod always deployed and set it down on something to gain the advantage of being deployed.

Well, a couple of days ago, Granik comes into my office and informs me that we are still using the deploy action and animations. WTF? So another decision made and I’m left out in the cold. Now it’s just going to add more time to getting these deployable weapons finished if parts of the weapon need animated.

If you read this G….I luv ya bro, but you can’t be doing this to me. I know I am not a “regular” employee anymore but jeeesh!

  1. At least you don’t use e-mail to keep in touch πŸ™‚

  2. Maybe this was another of the 1.25 feature-cuts, alluded to in last week’s newsletter as being intended to manage the certainty of pre-Christmas completion.

  3. Which of course has nothing to do with how the communications loop works…but that’s none of my business, other than that I’d hope it would work efficiently and to everyone’s satisfaction.

  4. SOooooo…you still have to deploy to be mounted to the window? I wonder at that, because with a bipod on a window sill, the MG is going to jump around as much as hand-held, and jump *less* to the bottom of the screen (the wall under the window is there), and therefore the energy of the gun is translated much more to making the gun jump UP and SIDEWAYS. Holding down the barrel with your hand from above requires you to lose aiming (standing up sideways and pressing one hand down on top of the barrel stabilizes the gun better, but removes your sight picture completely.

Tell GOPHUR he’s wrong and he owes me. That’ll get ya!

  5. Honestly, I am not sure the pintle mount ability will be in this patch. The weapon mesh remodel was quite an undertaking, and it’s still not complete yet.
We have some things to work out in the beta.

  6. We had to change it so we COULD deploy them on window sills, etc. Before we were just going to get rid of deploy and have you shoot from aimed when still, crouched or prone. Now we’re going to run a ray check for deploy so we need some animation to show that you have achieved a spot where you can “sit” it on an object. A little cheese but it works for a lot of other games. The animation can be really simple. Besides, as you pointed out you have to have the legs up on the German LMG to have a hand hold on the front. Think its the German one any way. If your late ass will get to the conference room well get it squared up.

  7. Can’t you all feel the love? Oh, great to hear you are finally going to allow window deploying.

  8. Anybody else get the sense that Gofur just thought, “Toto’s late, I’ll check his blog to see whats going on?”

  9. haha awesome

  10. He was actually checking out my latest girlie post.

  11. Can you deploy LMG’s on window seals? Or how about all those MG nest you guys made around the FB’s and AB’s…NO!…Fix it damn’t, or do away with the boar tits. I don’t care how you have to animate it, make it work, like it should have been done 2 years ago.

  12. If you guys are feeling really fancy, set up two TPS poses, one for highest height, one for lowest height, and blend between the two once the raytrace is done and you know the actual height of the object you’re mounting against. Could get some nice immersion seeing the guy crouched over the side of a wall at the right height instead of floating there ..

FPS, who cares, it’s all the same.

  13. Oh, and hi Toto .. long time, eh? πŸ™‚

  14. hey Thunder!

Yeah long time man. Are you sure you don’t want to come back? Blizzard can’t be that great.

  15. Yes, it can be πŸ™‚ I do miss the small feel of playnet, but .. well .. I’m working on WoW. There’s just a rush thinking “wow, 7 million people may see this feature” ..
